The Atlanta Humane Society is the oldest private charitable organization in Atlanta, founded in 1873 following a visit to the city by Robert E. Lee. The animal charity was originally chartered to protect women, children, and animals and remained a child protection and animal welfare society for 79 years. The Society, now a widely recognized pet adoption center, clinic, and educational program provider, was originally located on Marietta Street and moved to its present location at 981 Howell Mill Road in the 1930s.

Atlanta Humane Society is made up of many different components. We have our newly renovated Pet Adoption Center, where guests may meet and interact with all of our adoptable dogs and cats. In 2009, we placed nearly 6,000 pets into forever homes! We also have a full-service veterinary clinic where anyone is welcome to bring his or her pet. Our very own Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team (H.E.A.R.T.) is responsible for saving the lives of hundreds of animals. Weâ??ve rescued helpless animals from puppy mills, dog-fighting rings, and natural disastersâ??all in the past 6 months!

It is our mission to prevent neglect, abuse, cruelty, and exploitation of animals and to assure that their interests and well-being are fully, effectively, and humanely protected by an aware and caring society.
